Wisdom of the week

The summer months are upon us. Many churches face the summer with fear and trembling. With more of our people going on vacations during the summer months, our attendance will obviously be lower than normal. But if those of us who are in town will be faithful to our Lord by supporting the church, our attendance will remain high. This will show other how much we love and support our church.

Ephesians 5:14-18 reminds us that time is precious.

We need to use time wisely this summer. Here are some suggestions:

 1. Be away as few Sundays as possible. Arrange your vacation to take the least time from the church and its activities.

 2. If you’re a teacher or leader, be sure that someone has consented to take over your responsibilities while you’re gone.

 3. Don’t use the Lord’s money for vacation. There is no vacation from the responsibilities we have assumed as a church.

Let’s make this summer one that glorifies the Name of Jesus in all we do.

The maker of Summer

My Heavenly Father made the sunshine so abundantly this summer; He made the ocean we swim in and the pink, soft sand we play in. With loving care, He made each seashell unique and lovely.

He created the birds so skillfully; it’s awe-inspiring to watch them scurry along the seashore, fishing for their meal. He gave us the family and friends we have fun with on those leisurely summer evenings by the B-B-Q and the pool.I think He must be glad to see us take some time off and just re-charge.

So in all of Summer’s fun and relaxation, I won’t forget to honor and thank Him by visiting Him in Church on Sundays.

It’s the least I can do for all He has done for me!

August: The month of Theotokos

To the Orthodox Christian, August is a sacred month—a month that brings with it a feeling of intensified reverence. It is the month of the Blessed Theotokos.

For on the   fifteenth of August the Orthodox Church celebrates the most solemn of feasts related to the Mother of God, namely, her repose or falling asleep.

Special prayer services are held regularly during the first fifteen days of the month.

It is a period of special fasting similar to Lent. Orthodox families are invited to attend these services and to participate in the fast.

In commemorating her saints, the Church observes bit the day of their birth, but rather the day of their death. Hence, the feast day of St. Basil, (January 1), is the day on which St. Basil died. The reason for this, of course, is our belief that the day of death is our real birthday.

It marks our entry into the real sphere of existence, namely, eternal and ncorruptible life. And so it is for this reason, on the 15th of August, we observe this feast  joyfully, because our Lord’s Resurrection has shown us that death is not the end but the beginning of life
